light bright.
Walked into the living room this morning with Henry on my hip.
For six months he’s passed through the living room riding on my hip. I’d say he’s pretty well acquainted with the stuff in this house, which is why I was a little alarmed when all of a sudden, out of nowhere …
He GASPED.
And it was a loud gasp for a baby.
What the hell is wrong, I thought.
And then I saw the reflection of the lights in his eyes.
Oh right, the Christmas tree.
Sometimes I’m such a dumb adult.

I have written to you once before, I’m inspired to write today about our first child and Christmas ornaments. My two year old son and I were walking in an agricultural museum’s gift store when he spied an apple ornament. I had hold of one of his hands but he was fast, still is. Before I knew it my son had grabbed an ornamental red apple and taken a bite. I managed to get it out of his mouth before surgery was required and I felt obligated to purchase the ornament. We went home that day with a red apple ornament with a little tooth mark in it. Twenty seven years later it is the crowning touch to our Christmas tree every year, a tree which gets larger and larger every year as we have added two sisters to the mix and a new ornament every year for each. I have told the kids they don’t get their ornaments until they have their own families, something that I look forward to with a little melancholy. When those days come, and there are new branches of the family tree, our tree is going to be very bare, I guess my husband and I will have to start choosing some just for us. I can’t wait to get grandchildren started on the tradition! Merry Christmas to you and your family.
